Stability will prevail this Holy Week, according to the forecasts of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). Estimates suggest that the weather will remain unchanged from this Friday until, at least, the first days of the week, although with rain in the north of the peninsula and showers in the Balearic Islands. There is still uncertainty about whether this rainfall will extend from the Mediterranean to the south of the Peninsula. On Sunday temperatures will plummet, with an almost winter day throughout the territory, but they are expected to rise afterwards.

This Friday there will be clear skies in most of the country. Light rains are expected in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, the southeast and the Balearic Islands. Maximum temperatures will increase in the northern half of the peninsula and will decrease in Andalusia. In addition, very strong gusts of wind will blow in the northeast and the Balearic archipelago. The Aemet has activated coastal orange warnings due to bad seas in Girona, Mallorca and Menorca.

Saturday will be a similar day, with frost in mountain areas and also in the moors of the north and center of the Peninsula. Cities such as Cuenca, Teruel, Soria or Segovia will be around 0 degrees Celsius or even lower in the early hours of the morning and Pamplona will not exceed 12 degrees, according to Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo. The weather will continue without major alterations, although with more clouds in the northern half and with precipitation in the Cantabrian Sea and the Pyrenees. In this mountain range it will snow from about 1,000 meters. In addition, the snow level will experience a drop in the late hours in the north, to 700 meters.

“Palm Sunday will be a cold day for the time of year,” explains Del Campo, because the day will begin with frost in inland areas, especially in the north and east of the peninsula. The spokesperson anticipates that a marked temperature drop is expected in much of the territory. 13 degrees will not be exceeded in the northern and eastern interior of the Peninsula. It will rain in the Balearic Islands and in the north of the peninsula it will snow with significant accumulations at levels that can drop to 400 meters. For this reason, it is recommended to check the state of the roads before traveling on this day. “The wind will blow with very strong gusts in the Balearic archipelago and also in large areas of the north and east of the peninsular territory,” adds the Aemet spokesperson, who warns that in mountainous areas of northern Catalonia the gusts could be hurricanes.

Holy Week will begin with stable weather and rainfall limited to the extreme north of the peninsula. “Still with frost on Monday, but with a recovery in temperatures from that day on, so that in the following days we will have values more appropriate for the time of year,” Del Campo details. The snow level will be above 1,500 meters. “It cannot be ruled out, although it is unlikely, that a low pressure system located in the north of Africa could cause an increase in instability and leave rain in the Balearic Islands, the southeastern end of the Peninsula and also in the south of Andalusia,” details the spokesperson. Furthermore, this day the very strong gusts of wind will continue in the northeast of the peninsula and in the Balearic Islands.

The most likely thing, according to the forecasts, is that from Tuesday to Thursday the generally stable weather will continue, with rain in the extreme north of the Peninsula and in mountain areas of the rest of the northern half. Del Campo adds: “Although we insist that the probability for now is low, there may be precipitation in the Balearic Islands and parts of the Mediterranean area.” In the Canary Islands, the trade wind will blow at strong intervals, temperatures will remain unchanged and there may be weak and scattered rainfall on the mountainous islands.
