The plenary session of the National Secretariat of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) held this Saturday in Igualada (Barcelona) has elected Josep Vila as the new president of the entity for the 2026-2028 term, replacing the until now president, Lluís Llach, who did not want to run for re-election because his health, the ANC states in a statement, does not allow such strong dedication.

Vila has been elected with 39 votes out of the 58 cast, exceeding the qualified majority of two-thirds required in the first vote, reported in a statement. Lluís Llach has been chosen for the vice presidency; Ariadna Heinz has been elected to the secretariat and Blanca Currià will be the new treasurer.

Vila, born in 1959, is a pedagogue, teacher and activist, and has developed his professional career in the fields of primary, secondary and university teaching, in addition to having been director of the Territorial Youth Services of the Generalitat in Girona, trustee and vice-manager of Personnel and Organization of the University of Girona.

In his first statements as the new president, Vila has placed as a central objective the need to build a new social majority in favor of independence: “It is what we have to do from the civil front, and that is why we must continue working to put independence at the center of the debate.”

According to the entity, Vila’s proposal implies the culmination of a “deep renovation” of the ANC to make it more agile, simple and adapted to the new political and social context.

Vila has claimed the task of territorial assemblies that are “alive and well distributed, capable of mobilizing people and with the capacity to influence” because, he has stated, only with a majority of committed citizens will they have the capacity to put pressure on the parties.

The ANC affirms that the defense “of the language and the denunciation of the fiscal, cultural, social and national plunder that Catalonia suffers” will continue to be central axes of the organization’s action.
