What does the title “Special Media of the Year” mean to you personally – and what does human resources management stand for in your eyes? In your opinion, what are the ingredients for excellent HR journalism?

Anyone who has ever taken a long bike trip or a hut tour in the mountains knows this: the best stories can be told later about the stages that required special effort. Because they were steep or impassable, because a storm was raging or an obstacle had to be overcome. The fun of it sometimes increases with time. Looking back, the relaunch of our magazine feels similar. The focus was on providing the HR community with the best possible information with clever texts and a consistent and aesthetic design. This process was strenuous and challenging – but when the lioness looked at us from the first cover of the “new” HR management, it was clear that the work was worth it. The award as “Trade Magazine of the Year” is a wonderful reward for this.

Which encounter, which HR project or which interview made a lasting impression on you?

An extremely interesting conversation partner was the outgoing President of the Federal Institute for Vocational Training, Professor Friedrich Hubert Esser, whom I was only recently able to visit in Bonn. The affable Rhinelander – trained baker, scientist, actor in a variety of positions in professional associations – stands like no one else for the complex system of vocational training in Germany. Shortly before he retired, he told me in detail about his visions of how training and further education can be made fit for the future. By the way, you can read what his idea looks like in the upcoming issue of Human Resources.

What do you do when the editorial deadline passes?

Ride a bike. Longer distances are also welcome. As I said, the best stories can be told in the end, if you’ve put in a little effort.
