The management of citizen data has ceased to be a matter of simple administrative organization and has become a security problem. As computing has advanced, the infrastructure that supports all of an Administration’s information has remained in the hands of private companies, the vast majority of which are of American origin. Seeking to regain control and autonomy over this strategic information, the Generalitat took the first step this Tuesday to provide itself with what will be the first cloud independent public of Spain. It is a digital infrastructure designed to store and process data from Catalonia under exclusively European jurisdiction and reduce technological dependence on large international providers. The advisor to the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, during the presentation of the tender, valued at 481 million euros, defended: “It is important that the data of the citizens of Catalonia be on European soil and, specifically, on Catalan soil.”
