Pope Leo XIV recalled that “wealth often makes us blind” in his speech at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria stadium this Thursday. The Pontiff added that those who “have the presumption of being self-sufficient, of knowing everything” find themselves “stunned by the roars of a pompous ‘I’.” The Pontiff has arrived in Gran Canaria with a harsh message for “those who have decisive responsibilities in their hands” to manage migration. His first stop was the port of Arguineguín, a symbol of the failure of migration management in Europe and where he met with migrants and the volunteers and workers who care for them. There, he stated: “This drama must become an examination of conscience: for the nations of origin, which must create conditions of peace, justice and development; for the transit nations, called to protect and not leave the weak in the hands of criminal networks; for Europe, which cannot proclaim human dignity and get used to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic being cemeteries without tombstones.” His last stop in the Canary Islands will be tomorrow in Tenerife, where he will have another meeting with migrants.
