The tension to demand labor improvements in public services in Catalonia has been increasing for months. In addition to the strikes by teachers – this Thursday the first day of the new round of strikes planned in education for the months of May and June will take place – and by doctors – the last day of strike was on April 27 -, Catalonia is adding a trail of protests in different municipal services that put pressure on the public management of the municipalities one year before the elections in the City Councils. In the profusion of strikes in social services in Barcelona, in the cleaning service in Girona or in different companies that manage public services in various locations, there are two key elements: on the one hand, the proximity of the municipal elections gives a position of strength to the workers, and makes the administrations feel more forced to give in; and on the other hand, it is a golden opportunity that small unions have been able to read to gain weight in the union elections that are taking place during these months.
