HR career question: How can I achieve more impact in business as an HR professional?

Question: I have been working in HR management for many years and would like to contribute more to the company’s success. How does it work?

Many HR managers want to be perceived as a strategic partner and make a visible contribution to the company’s success. At the same time, in everyday life there is often the feeling that you are primarily controlling processes, supporting projects or solving operational issues. Your own work is valued – but the question remains: Am I really creating an impact or am I primarily completing tasks?

Perhaps the answer begins with a surprising insight: If you want to achieve more impact, you should first worry less about visibility and first question your own effectiveness.

Impact begins with the correct definition of role, responsibility and goals

Not every HR role automatically offers the same opportunities to actively shape the business. That’s why it’s worth taking an honest inventory first.

  • Am I involved in decisions at an early stage?
  • Do I have regular contact with managers and departments?
  • Can I provide advice or will I mainly be involved in implementing decisions that have already been made?

Equally important is the question of expectations for the role.

  • Are the goals defined in such a way that a contribution to the company’s success can be made visible? Or are only process metrics such as processing times, number of training courses or filled positions measured?

Anyone who is supposed to act as a business partner also needs business goals. These include, for example, supporting growth initiatives, securing critical competencies, reducing fluctuation or successfully supporting transformations. Only when the role is measured by such results will the necessary scope for real impact arise.

Business partnering is an attitude – not a job title

Business partnering is often associated with a specific position. In fact, it is primarily a way of thinking: How does my role contribute to the company becoming more successful?

A recruiter who fills key positions much more quickly and thereby accelerates the development of a new product creates immediate business added value. A talent manager who secures succession for critical leadership positions reduces risks and strengthens the future viability of the company. A learning expert who prepares managers for new business models makes an important contribution to transformation. And an HR operations team that digitizes and standardizes processes creates freedom for managers and employees and increases the productivity of the entire organization.

Understanding the business before developing HR solutions

Effective HR managers do not start with HR tools, but with the challenges of the business. How does the company make money? Which customers are particularly important? Which products or services should grow? What skills are needed for this? Anyone who regularly communicates with sales, product development, finance or operations automatically develops a better understanding of priorities and connections. This makes HR solutions more practical, relevant and effective.

Make impact visible – not activities

Many HR areas still report on measures: number of training courses, recruiting activities or completed projects. However, business is primarily interested in the impact of these measures. Has the time to hire shortened? Were key positions filled more quickly? Has fluctuation decreased? Were managers able to work more productively? Was a transformation implemented more successfully? Anyone who talks about results instead of activities changes the perception of their own role. A supporting role becomes a valued sparring partner.

Be present where value is created

Impact does not occur in the HR silo. It arises where decisions are made about customers, growth, investments and changes. That’s why HR managers should consciously seek proximity to the business: in department management meetings, strategy projects, budget discussions or transformation initiatives. The exchange with customers or customer-related areas is just as valuable. If you understand why customers choose the company or which skills will make the difference in the future, you can tailor recruiting, talent management or personnel development accordingly. Digital tools and AI are increasingly taking over routine activities and creating freedom for precisely these advisory and business-related tasks.

Conclusion: A consistent change of perspective is needed

More impact in business does not come from more activities, but from a consistent change of perspective. First, you should check whether your own role offers the necessary scope for creativity and is measured against the right goals. The next step is to understand the business, consistently align your own work with the company’s goals and make the contribution made comprehensible. Perhaps that is exactly the most important career skill in the coming years: not to implement as many HR initiatives as possible, but rather to make a measurable contribution to the company’s success with the right measures – and to make this visible.
