Ignacio Gordillo, who for three decades was a prosecutor of the National Court in cases related to ETA or the GAL, died this Monday in Madrid at the age of 75, according to the Madrid Bar Association’s regrets on its website.
Born in Madrid in 1950, Gordillo developed an extensive and recognized career in the legal field, especially linked to criminal law and economic criminal law. Graduated in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid, he also obtained a doctorate degree with a thesis on blasphemy and religious freedom, graded with outstanding cum laude.
In 1976 he entered the Judicial School and opted for a tax career, beginning a career that would lead him to positions at the Provincial Court of Girona and Valladolid before joining the National Court in 1980. For thirty years as prosecutor of the National Court, he intervened in procedures of great legal and social relevance, linked both to the fight against terrorism and the prosecution of organized economic crime.
His work was associated with cases related to ETA, GRAPO and the GAL, as well as investigations and procedures regarding kidnappings or attacks. After leaving the Public Prosecutor’s Office in 2010, he continued his professional career in the private practice of law, focusing his activity on Criminal Law, Economic Criminal Law, corporate crimes, money laundering and the criminal liability of legal entities.
Author of publications and regular participant in legal forums, seminars and training activities, Gordillo, who was part of the ICAM Governing Board in 2013, was a figure recognized for his deep knowledge of Criminal Law, his experience in highly complex matters and his commitment to the rule of law.
