Spain promotes the creation of a Global Council for an Economy for the Common Good that will be led by economist Mazzucato
The first vice president of the Government and Minister of Economy, Carlos Corpo, announced this Thursday in Barcelona the creation of a Global Council for an Economy of the Common Good. He announced this during his speech at one of the tables of the Global Progressive Mobilization forum that takes place in the Catalan capital and in which the Italian economist from the University College London (UCL) Mariana Mazzucato also participated, who has joined the project.
According to sources from the Ministry of Economy, this body, whose first meeting will take place in the summer of 2026, aims to articulate “new economic thinking to inform the design of more effective policies, improve institutional practices and the reform of the multilateral system.” “It is structured on four principles: justice, equality, sustainability and global solidarity,” they added.
The Council, which will have Spain as the first host country, will have the participation of Finance Ministers, representatives of civil society and economists with recognized international experience, according to these sources. The meetings will be in person and will occur on the sidelines of global events such as the annual meetings of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the COP (the UN meeting on climate change). In addition, there will be a second in-person meeting planned in Madrid in the spring of 2027 to develop a reform agenda.
“Spain is a clear example that economic growth and modernization can be promoted without renouncing environmental, fiscal and social responsibility,” said Body. “This Council proposes an intervention at the level of economic thought itself. The common good is not a slogan: it is an operational framework to rethink how markets work from their origin: who they serve, what they reward and whose voices count,” added Mazzucato.
