EH Bildu has confirmed that its general secretary, Arnaldo Otegi, received death threats that were sent to the party’s parliamentary group in the Basque Parliament in December 2025. The leader of the sovereigntist party went this past Monday to testify as an alleged victim in the Vitoria court that is investigating these anonymous threats, as EH Bildu sources confirmed today.

The representatives of EH Bildu on the Parliament Board, acting on behalf of the group, filed a complaint with the Basque Police. The sovereigntist party has recalled that the email with intimidating content was received “hours after” the president of the Basque PP, Javier de Andrés, stated that he wanted the political “extermination” of EH Bildu.

In a session of the Basque Chamber on December 18, De Andrés predicted that EH Bildu will be “exterminated from Euskadi as a political force”, which triggered a controversy and an initiative by EH Bildu for the PNV and the PSE-EE to support applying a “cordon sanitaire” to the popular formation in Parliament. De Andrés later acknowledged that “perhaps the word extermination was not the most accurate.”

EH Bildu has indicated this Tuesday that it decided not to make public the anonymous death threats, made by The Mailbecause he is in favor of “always maintaining discretion regarding these events” and “is not used to making these types of situations public.”
