As the new year progresses, many people across the UK take stock of their health following December’s indulgences. Skin health, daily vitality, and sustainable wellbeing habits are often high on the list. Collagen frequently appears in these discussions, though its role is often misunderstood.

Supp, a UK supplement brand co-founded by biomedical scientist Olivia Buckley, approaches collagen from a scientific standpoint. Rather than focusing on cosmetic claims, the company prioritises formulations designed to work with the body’s natural biological processes.

“Collagen is often marketed as a topical fix,” Buckley explains. “But collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin barrier. Creams can hydrate the surface, but they do not deliver collagen into the dermis where structure and elasticity are determined. Supporting collagen from within is where the real science sits.”

The gradual decline of collagen production typically begins around the age of 30. Seasonal influences, such as colder weather and winter lifestyle changes, may also affect skin moisture levels and overall resilience.

Studies have demonstrated that when hydrolysed collagen peptides are taken orally, they are absorbed into the bloodstream as identifiable amino acid chains. These compounds can then support collagen synthesis within the skin.

“Your body makes collagen from amino acids, but it cannot do this without vitamin C,” Buckley adds. “Vitamin C is a required cofactor for collagen formation. If levels are low, collagen production slows, regardless of how much protein you consume.”

Each serving of Supp’s Marine Collagen supplement delivers 1,200 mg of sustainably sourced hydrolysed marine collagen peptides, paired with vitamin C to support normal collagen formation.

Clinical evidence suggests that this combination, when taken consistently, may lead to modest improvements in skin hydration and elasticity, particularly in adults over 30 who follow a balanced lifestyle.

“Our philosophy is food first, supplementation second,” says Buckley. “A diet rich in quality protein alongside vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables lays the foundation. Supplements should support that base, not replace it.”

Supp’s Marine Collagen is produced in the UK under GMP manufacturing standards and is offered in capsule form for ease of use. Like all Supp products, it is free from gluten, dairy, caffeine, and GM ingredients.

“At the start of the year, people want routines that are realistic,” Buckley explains. “Consistency matters far more than extremes. Collagen works best when taken daily, alongside good nutrition, hydration, and sleep.”
