Barcelona City Council will be able to process the urban planning plan of the government of Mayor Jaume Collboni for the future Thyssen Museum in the old Cine Comedia with the support of Junts. The party announced this Thursday that it will vote in favor of the urban modification, which means for the PSC to have a majority and move forward. Junts has boasted of having achieved greater protection of heritage, less commercial use and improving the museum program. It will be next week in the vote in the urban planning commission and later, the final vote in the plenary session.
The vote in favor of the modification of the general metropolitan plan will allow the implementation of a cultural project that Junts understands “to have international impact and that is good for the city, for the Eixample and that respects the heritage that the Palau Marcet represents.” The project has been the subject of several controversies and recently the architects criticized it and demanded a participatory process from the City Council.
Junts has highlighted heritage protection in its negotiation with the PSC municipal government, with a final version of the proposal that “clearly establishes the maintenance and restoration of the facades, the conservation of the original volume and the original restitution of the chamfer.” The agreement establishes that any volume increase will be subject to favorable reports from the Heritage Department. “Elements that had been lost will be recovered and pedestrians will stop to contemplate this building as they do with La Pedrera or Casa Batlló,” celebrated the leader of Junts in the council, Jordi Martí.
Regarding the reduction in commercial use (for restaurants and commerce), Martí has described it as “drastic” because it will go from 25% of the total to 16%. And the agreement contemplates prohibiting a possible bar or restaurant from having an entrance from the street.
Finally, regarding the cultural offer, Martí has assured that the project “incorporates a detailed program that includes permanent and temporary exhibition spaces, an assembly hall, mediation and education areas, technical spaces and reserves.” “It is not a simple announcement, but a formal commitment that guarantees robust operation adapted to contemporary standards.”
